Conservation project
Conservation: a solution to protect Memphremagog Lake Magog, July 5th, 2010 : In keeping with its mission that aims to protect the environmental health and the natural beauty of Lake Memphremagog and its watershed, Memphremagog Conservation Inc. (MCI) is developing a new conservation project that will involve close collaboration with owners of natural areas.
“ The conservation of natural areas and biodiversity on this territory will not only directly contribute to the protection of Lake Memphremagog- an important reservoir of drinking water- but also to the preservation of the region’s beautiful landscapes and the quality of life of its residents”, states Gisèle Lacasse Benoit, president of MCI.
MCI believes it is possible to reconcile conservation with the use of the territority without curtailing socio-economic development in a region whose economy is closely linked to its exceptional natural resources.
In order to protect the fragile elements in a region that is mostly privately-owned, MCI is counting on the voluntary participation of private landowners through conservation agreements such as land donations, the application of conservation servitudes or nature reserve status. These landowners could therefore take advantage of certain income tax incentives or a reduction of their municipal taxes.
In the course of the next year, MCI will organize two conferences on conservation of natural areas : July 18th in Georgeville (Murray Memorial Hall – 10:00) and September 11th in Austin (Austin Town Hall – 9:30). For those landowners interested in obtaining more information on these conservation options or the process involved, individual meetings can also be arranged by contacting MCI.
